Life style recommendations
Maintain a level of physical activity that keeps you fit and matches the number of calories you eat. Walk or do other activities for at least 30 minutes on most days. To lose weight, do enough activity to use up more calories than you eat every day.
Follow a diet that provides proper amounts of nutrients. A healthy diet should be rich in fruits, vegetables, and grain products that contain fiber, particularly soluble fiber, and are low in saturated fat and cholesterol.
It is important to consume fewer calories than you burn. To calculate the number of calories you should be consuming on a daily basis, multiply your weight in pounds by 10. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, you should consume approximately 2,000 calories a day. Diet that restricts calorie intake below this amount can result in unhealthy weight loss and can cause you to lose lean muscle instead of fat. It is recommended that the daily calories should be consumed in five or six small meals.
To get the right amounts of the proper nutrients, it is recommended to follow a daily diet that provides 30 percent carbohydrates (preferably complex carbohydrates - the starches in grains, legumes, vegetables and some fruits), 15 percent fat, 35 percent protein, and 20 percent fiber. Each gram of protein provides four calories, each gram of carbohydrate provides four calories, and each gram of fat provides nine calories.
To calculate how many grams of each of these nutrients should be consumed daily, use the following equations:
Grams of protein = total daily calories x 0.35/4
Grams of carbohydrates = total daily calories x 0.3/4
Grams of fat = total daily calories x 0.15/9
For total daily calories of 2,000, you need 175 grams of protein, 150 grams of carbohydrates, and 33 grams of fat a day. You also need to drink six to eight glasses of water every day; and include a daily mild physical activity.
Limit foods high in saturated fat, trans fat and/or cholesterol, such as full-fat milk products, fatty meats, tropical oils, partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and egg yolks.
If you weigh about 75 kg and follow a restricted diet of 30 and 50 grams of carbohydrate per day, you are likely to regain the weight lost once you stop dieting.
